Covid/Lockdown & Health & Safety
Many companies have been working from home during the past year and will remain so for the foreseeable future. Hopefully, as part of this process, the employer has ensured all employees are ‘kitted out’ at home with a decent chair, a desk and a computer monitor. It is still important to complete a home/workplace risk assessment to prevent any potential Health risks such as back pain, repetitive strain injury, eye strain or even stress.
Whilst the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 do not apply to domestic premises, IF your employee is working from home, then you, as the employer, have a duty to do whatever is reasonably practicable to protect the health and safety of your employees.
Your risk assessment should cover the work being done, the hours spent working and the equipment being used. Your employees also have an obligation to take care of their own health and safety and highlight any potential or known dangers to you, their employer.
For most home workers who were previously office based, there are two main risks:
- using display screen equipment for long periods of time, as this may lead to eye strain, back pain and repetitive strain injury and
- the significant risk to an employees’ mental health
